Berlin Textures

in progress

Textures surround us everywhere and accompany city life: underfoot, on walls, in cracks of asphalt, on rain-darkened stone, in the traces of time on metal. We usually perceive the world as a single image where geometry and texture merge, though these elements can be viewed separately: geometry defines the form and structure of objects, while textures add surface detail – color, pattern, material qualities, wear, and reflections.

This project brings Berlin’s textures into the foreground and examines them outside their usual context. Berlin is very diverse: soft, natural surfaces coexist with hard urban materials; clean rhythms with dirty, highly detailed areas; smooth planes with viscous, porous structures. Through their differences and similarities, the city’s makeup becomes visible – a collection of materials, layers, and marks of time that often go unnoticed.
